The Power of Guilt in Crowds

On the day of September 11 2001 there was a terrorist attack on the World’s Trade Center

where two American aircrafts crashed into the two buildings. 2,996 people were killed during that day and the people inside that building were given very few chances. They either waited in the burning building to accept death or jump over one thousand feet in the air. If people had or didn’t have a relative that had passed  away in 9/11 would they be mad if it ever happened? Would they seek out revenge towards the terrorist? Would they join the military to fight for all of America? Or would they let the terrorists win. People are usually provoked by these types of things because it relates to them on a personal level.

Crowd psychology Can be in many forms that bring people together whether It was from what a dictator said or just a trend for a charity or something on the internet. As stated by Lebon “individuals are gathered together is a crowd for purposes of action.”-Gustave Lebon. This relates to crowd psychology because it proves what ways that it can be formed. September 11 was a perfect example of crowd psychology because everyone had the same idea once they saw the disaster strike everyone had the same idea to escape the scene in order to survive which connects to a escapist mob theory. George Bush used 9/11 to basically win the election by making the people feel bad and tell the people to not let the terrorists win or get away with what they did to America.

Guilt is the act to make someone feel sad or regretful to in order to make someone do

something. Guilt is most commonly used in a commercial on television. For example, have you

ever seen those Sarah McLachlan animal cruelty commercials that try to get you to donate

money for the abused animals and try to even get you to adopt one by playing sad music and

showing the sickly looking animals. You may think that this will never work but it is actually a

very useful strategy by playing with your emotions, even though it may not have worked it

probably got you to feel bad on the inside. “Crowds, doubtless, are always unconscious,

But this very unconsciousness is perhaps one of the excerpt of their strength” -Gustave Lebon. This quote relates to the theory of Groupthink where all the people within a crowd all think alike due to them being in a situation not clear to them.

So the military used the tragedy of 9/11 to draw in more people to fight the country

By provoking the people, telling them they are letting the terrorist win. Another organization that

uses guilt for their own benefit are charities.Charities use guilt by using the illness they are trying to cure as a way to make people feel bad for the people being so unfortunate to get the illness and can’t do anything. Guilt is a very useful strategy and can be used for almost anything in an attempt to get anything that you may want by either making the person feel bad for you or just persuade them that they don’t need that something.

Donating to charities has become a norm towards society and some people feel that not donating is considered to be cruel or a bad thing to do and people will view others differently. This concept relates to Collective Consciousness because everyone has a set of shared beliefs towards the way of being guilty towards charities.

The military is an extremely important part when it comes to America’s safety and power in the country. So in order to have the military function it constantly needs more and more people to enlist and fight for the country’s safety. So how will they persuade people to join the military, they use guilt that’s how. During 2001 there was a terrorist attack on the World’s trade center which cause a lot of of hate for terrorist and the only way to seek out revenge or avenge the fallen is to fight and join the military. Before 2001 there were 555,786 people who were enlisted

into the military but during 2002 another 570,000 people joined the military.

9/11 also had a major impact towards the younger population. But till this day after 9/11 there have been a total of 3.6 million americans have joined military services, this includes men and women.  Ages 16-21 military enlistment increased by 8 percent.Another way they get people to join the military was video games such as Call of duty. The video game persuaded the players into thinking that the military wasn’t as bad as it seemed and fueled the fire into joining the military making it easier than it seems.  Military isn’t the only thing that uses guilt but charities use the illness of others to get money for their own support. Charities in america receive a total of 60 billion dollars a year on average. Only during 2017 a total of all the money charities made received a grand total of 410 Billion dollars. ‚

By 2005, when the U.S. was was embroidered in the worst of the civil war in Iraq the army the army surpassed its recruiting goal by nearly 7000 people. This shows how people were still frustrated about 9/11 and were targeting Arabic ethnicity.

The questions displayed are off examples that reflect off the topic within the text. The responses gathered were from 41 participants that took the survey. The question “what the reason is for people to join the military.” This relates to the topic because in the military people would join or enlist to fight to get revenge and honor our country. So the preferred answer was hoping was the second one about how the long lasting effects of 9/11 impacted the person to join the military. The reason for my hope of this response is to prove my topic. 9/11 impacted my people to enlist into the military because the people didn’t want the terrorist to win or make them feel like they won by getting away with what they did to us. The second question was put up for people to respond to about what would impact the survey taker the most to donate to a charity. The question relates to the topic because charities use advertising to get people to feel bad. They do this by showing people or animals with illness or diseases making them look weak or frail to get people to feel guilty because they were unfortunate individuals. This would cause the individuals to feel guilty of their healthy life to donate some money to help them feel better. This question unlike the other worked and the response that was preferred wanted proves the topic. The best choice was the first one where the person decides if they are worthy or feel bad for the charity and donate.

Ultimately, crowd psychology is critical for all members of society to understand because it involves all of society in some sort of way. For example, on television you see protests against a topic where people are trying fight with or against that certain topic. That in itself is crowd psychology, also even if you are not there experiencing it you may still connect with that crowd of people.

There are many different types of crowd psychology though. But to be more specific as the one depicted in this essay it a crowd psychology that is used to pull people in using the emotion guilt. This can be used in a cruel way or in a neutral way. Such as just simply making someone feel bad using lies to have your way with them or using true facts that may play with the person’s emotions to get your own benefits. More specifically, this study would be most useful to a country’s military because it helps draw in more people to enlist in order to make a country stronger and more secure.

The military does this for the greater good in order to build a better society. It can also help people who don’t know what to do with themselves and can help their lives become more meaningful and it is for the greater good. So in the end being gullible is either good or bad depending on the people that are going to bend your will so that is one reason why you should be knowledgeable about crowd psychology and the people within that crowd.
